Safety lighting: Light during power outages!

In the event of a power failure, emergency lighting activates to prevent potential hazards. There are three types of safety lighting: escape lighting, anti-panic lighting, initial lighting, and safety signs.

Backlit safety signs facilitate building evacuation after a general lighting failure by helping people to find their way around more quickly and to leave dangerous areas via escape routes. The characteristics of backlit safety signs are described and specified in DIN EN 1838.

Quality characteristics: Visibility, chromaticity, contrast
Measured quantities: Luminance, color coordinates, and luminance distribution

Requirements:

  • Minimum luminance for safety color: 2 cd/m².
  • Contrast ratio between min/max for safety color and contrast color < 10:1
  • contrast between safety color and contrast color between 5:1 and 15:1
  • in case of power failure, an illumination duration of at least 1 hour must be ensured
  • Behavior after power failure min. 50% required luminance after 5 seconds and 100% required luminance after 60 seconds
